Nomvelo Makhanya on Her DJ Journey and New Music
Actress Nomvelo Makhanya, renowned for her role as Lindiwe Ngema in e.tv’s soap opera Scandal!, has embarked on a new journey in her career. After leaving the show in 2022 following a nine-year stint, she has launched her music career as a DJ. Besides Scandal!, Nomvelo is also known for her performances in Soul City and Isibaya.
Transition from Acting to DJing
In an interview with TshisaLIVE, Nomvelo, now going by the name “Mvelo” in the music scene, shared her aspirations to enter the music industry. Her interest was sparked during her time with DJ Black Coffee’s former record label, Soulistic. She began her journey by taking DJing classes with Lebza The Villain and learning from various people in the industry. Although she was part of Soulistic, she has since parted ways with them.
Nomvelo decided to take a break from acting after being known for her character in Scandal! for nine years. She felt the need to release the character and focus on music. However, she has returned to attending auditions, expressing her longing for acting and hoping for a new opportunity.
Joining the Ranks of South African DJs
Nomvelo joins a list of South Africa’s top personalities who have transitioned into DJing, including Thuli Mpongolo, Pearl Thusi, and Dineo Ranaka. The 28-year-old actress-turned-DJ finds the experience of trying something new and seeing it come to fruition to be highly motivating.

Nomvelo draws inspiration from Desiree, one of South Africa’s most promising house DJs known for her Afrocentric meets techno style. She believes that whether she’s singing, acting, or DJing, she’s healing people through her work. Her acting talent has educated and healed viewers in their homes, and she aims to deliver the same energy through her music or DJing career.
The star, born in Nkandla, revealed that her fans would soon get to know her sound of choice through her upcoming singles.
