Masasa Lindiwe Mbangeni, born on March 6, 1987, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, is a renowned South African actress. She has been active in the acting industry since 2008 and is best known for her role as Thembeka Shezi in the popular television serial Scandal!.

Early Life

Mbangeni was born in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. As she grew older, she moved to Johannesburg to pursue her studies. This move marked the beginning of her journey into the world of dramatic arts.

Education

Mbangeni’s academic journey led her to the University of Witwatersrand. She was awarded the prestigious Mandela Rhodes scholarship, which enabled her to pursue her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dramatic Arts. She specialized in Performance and Directing, laying a strong foundation for her future acting career.

Early Career

Mbangeni’s career began with guest appearances on two television serials. She played the role of ‘Eunice’ on the BBC crime drama Silent Witnesses and ‘Jackie’s personal assistant’ on the M-Net soapie, Egoli.

In addition to her television work, Mbangeni also showcased her talent on stage. She performed in three plays at the Johannesburg Market Theatre: Nogogo, Sundjata, and Amen Corner, all directed by James Ngcobo. She also toured the Grahamstown Festival of the Arts with the play Oedipus @ Koonu.

Breakthrough Role in Scandal!

In 2013, Mbangeni joined the cast of the popular television serial Scandal! and played the role of ‘Thembeka Shezi’. The role became highly popular and earned her two nominations for Best Actress in a TV Soap from the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) in 2014 and 2015. She also received a nomination for Best Actress in the inaugural DStv Mzansi Magic Viewers Choice Award.

Post-Scandal! Career

After leaving Scandal! in 2016, Mbangeni continued to make her mark in the acting industry. She appeared in the second season of the thriller television series Thola, broadcast on the SABC2 channel. She then played the role of ‘Celia’ on the series Harvest. She later returned to Scandal!, only for her character to be shot dead, marking Mbangeni’s second exit from the show.

Other Works

In 2011, Mbangeni showcased her talent on the big screen in the feature film Machine Gun Preacher. Apart from acting, she has also used her platform to raise awareness about important social issues. In 2015, she participated in the Marie Claire naked campaign to raise public awareness about sexual violence against women and children.
