Mduduzi Mabaso, born on the 1st of April, 1976, is a renowned actor hailing from South Africa. He has gained significant recognition and acclaim for his performances in various films and television series, including “Blood Diamond”, “Machine Gun Preacher”, “Hotel Rwanda”, and “Rhythm City”.
Early Life and Education
Mduduzi Mabaso was born and brought up in Alexandra, a township located in the northern part of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent a significant portion of his childhood, three years to be precise, in Transkei. Transkei is a former homeland situated in the eastern Cape Province. It was during these formative years that Mabaso discovered his passion for acting. This revelation led him to attend drama school, where he honed his acting skills and laid the foundation for his future career.
Acting Career
Beginning of His Journey
Mduduzi Mabaso embarked on his acting journey in the year 1992. His first appearance was in a theatre production titled “Divide and Rule”. Following this, he showcased his talent in several stage plays, including “Cry The Beloved Country”, “Madiba’s Magic”, “Behind the Curtains”, “Shaka Zulu”, and “Tasha On The Rocks”.

Transition to Films
In 2004, Mabaso made his debut in the film industry with the American film “Hotel Rwanda”, directed by Terry George. The film, based on the horrific Rwandan genocide of 1994, saw Mabaso in the role of a hotel employee who assists the protagonist, Paul Rusesabagina, in saving hundreds of refugees.
Following his debut, Mabaso starred in several other films, such as “Catch a Fire” (2006), “Heartlines” (2006), “Blood Diamond” (2006), and “Machine Gun Preacher” (2011). He also appeared in a short film called “Sekalli le Meokgo” (2006), directed by Tebho Mahlatsi. This film went on to win the Best Short Film award at the 2007 Durban International Film Festival.
Television Roles
Mabaso is particularly famous for his television roles. He is best known for his portrayal of Suffocate Ndlovu, a gangster and nightclub owner, on the e.tv soap opera “Rhythm City”. He played this role from the show’s debut in July 2007 until its last episode in July 2021. In addition to “Rhythm City”, Mabaso has appeared in other television shows, such as “Zone 14”, “Yizo Yizo 2”, “A Place Called Home”, “Soul City”, “Justice For All 4”, and “Chicken Biznis”.
Accolades and Recognition
Mabaso’s exceptional acting skills have earned him several awards, including two Golden Horn Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Soap and Best Actor in a Feature Film. In 2015, he also walked the Soweto Fashion Week runway for fashion designer Floyd Avenue, showcasing his versatility beyond acting.

Mduduzi Mabaso was previously married to Veronica Maseko, and the couple has two children together: Ntokozo and Mpumi. Currently, Mabaso is married to fellow actress Fatima Metsileng, whom he met on the set of “Zone 14” in 2007. The couple has two more children: Njabulo and Zolile.
