During her university years, Smangele honed her acting skills at The Market Theatre Laboratory and The Institute of African Theatre. She performed in numerous theatre productions, including “The Devil’s Protest” and “The Toilet”, and collaborated with organizations such as the Positive Art Society and the Youth Drama Society.

Smangele made her television debut in 2002 with a minor role in the SABC1 education series Gaz’lam, playing “Foxy’s Friend”. Her breakthrough came in 2003 when she joined the third season of the SABC1 drama series Yizo Yizo, portraying the character “Nomsa”. Her performance earned her a Special Mention Award at the 2004 Venice Film Festival’s Human Rights Film Network Awards.

Continued Success in Television

Following her initial success, Smangele continued to make her mark in the television industry. In 2005, she played “Madi” in the second season of the SABC1 drama Zone 14, a role she reprised in the following three seasons. She also appeared in Heartlines: The Good Fight in 2006, playing the character “Faith”. In 2012, she joined the cast of the e.tv soap opera Scandal!, portraying “Nomcebo”. Her most recent role is “Abigail Miya” in the e.tv soap opera Imbewu, a character she has been playing since the show’s second season in 2019.

After relocating to Durban, Smangele embarked on a radio career as a content producer for several radio stations in KwaZulu-Natal, including Ukhozi FM and Gagasi 99.5 FM. Her work in radio was recognized with an MTN radio award.
