Simphiwe Ngema

Simphiwe Ngema, a renowned actress known for her role in Muvhango, has been personally affected by the rampant crime in Mzansi. She tragically lost her husband, Dumi Masilela, in 2017 when he fell victim to a botched hijacking in Tembisa.

A Plea for Attention to Violent Crime

In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, Simphiwe emphasized that violent crime should no longer be ignored. She highlighted its devastating impact, stating, “It is a major contributor to our broken homes, families and the poor performance of our economy as a country.”

The Fear and Inadequacy of Law Enforcement

Simphiwe expressed the fear that grips people due to the high crime rate. She criticized law enforcement agencies for advising people on how to avoid becoming victims of crime, rather than utilizing resources to combat crime effectively.

She lamented the government’s apparent absence in addressing violent and organized crime. Despite South Africa’s resourcefulness, she feels the government has gone missing in action.

Simphiwe pointed out that while the government claims to be fighting corruption, there is no visible plan in place to tackle it effectively.

Demand for Government Action

She urged the government to take concrete action against crime, rather than making empty promises during election campaigns.

Simphiwe shared how crime has personally affected her and other South Africans. She asserted, “I believe we deserve to feel safe and we deserve justice irrespective of our social status.”

She expressed her concern that crime is not a priority in the country, despite the South African Police Service (SAPS) having a substantial budget.

Simphiwe believes that if the government prioritizes crime, it would lead to safer environments for raising children, boost the economy, and strengthen the country’s global position.

A Vision for a Safer South Africa

She envisioned a South Africa where citizens don’t have to worry about their houses being broken into, their children being kidnapped, or their phones being stolen. She concluded by calling on the government to heed the country’s cry, learn from past mistakes, and strive to make South Africa a better country.
